Solid Waste Management Association of Thailand
Background
The Solid Waste Management Association of Thailand (SWAT), established in September 2015 as a non-profit organization, has objectives to develop and support activities related to solid waste management, enhance waste management practices and technical standards, coordinate and cooperate with all stakeholders domestically and internationally on waste management and to disseminate knowledge and raise awareness among the public on waste and environmental management.
As of March 2024, there are about 90 members. Membership is categorized into 4 sectors including business, government, academic and general public sectors.
Mission Statement
SWAT strives to be the top think tank on sustainable waste management in Thailand. It intends to disseminate best practices to every level of the society and builds network of excellence domestically and internationally.

- Organized Annual SWAT Conference since 2020.
- Organized ASEAN Waste Management Forum 2016 and 2017 with speakers from more than 10 countries and more than 100 delegates.
- Organized Seminars and Site Visits on Waste to Energy including BMA (Bangkok) and EEP (Samut Prakarn).
- Support research and policy formulation project on MSW, commissioned by the Department of Local Administration [2017-2018] and on EPR and Circular Economy by the Pollution Control Department and Thai Health Foundation.
- Co-hosted international workshops with Japan Society of Material Cycles and Waste Management (JSMCWM) and Korean Society of Waste Management (KSWM) annually since 2019 (3RINCs Conference) and with Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia and Institute of Developing Economies, JETRO (November 2019).
- Presented in local and international seminars organized by e.g. UN Environment, UNIDO, Department of Primary Industry and Minerals (DPIM), Waste Management Association of Malaysia (WMAM), GRET (Myanmar), United Nations University – Sustainable Cycles Programme, Asia Pacific Waste and Environment Alliance (APWEA).
- Implemented Plastic Footprint Reduction Project, funded by UNEP (2019-2021) to study plastic footprint from 12 organizations ranging from food & beverage industry, hotels, plastic producers, schools and a municipality.
- Registered as an Environmental Protection NGO by the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
